3D Designer
Sam Grannon
Sam is not just interested in making things. He is interested in what becomes of them. Everything else – the materials, the process, the precision – follows from that.
Sam didn’t arrive at making through a craft tradition. A background in games design led to over fifteen years in CGI and then product design. Before any of that, there were other jobs: cleaning drains, high-pressure water jetting, production lines.
It’s a route that sounds unconventional until you hear him talk about form, function and why good design doesn’t announce itself. That grounded, practical intelligence runs through everything he makes now.
“A lot of the jobs I had before shaped me. They gave me life lessons and skills I still apply to this day – from cleaning drains to high-pressure water jetting, plumbing, production lines and more. They gave me an understanding of how things work and what makes great design.”
Sam joined the Exiled team on a freelance basis before coming on full-time, drawn in by the open brief, the creative freedom, the materials and the people. His domain is digital fabrication alongside material reuse. His 3D printers are, in his own words, works of art in themselves: compact machines with impeccable design and enormous capability.
His favoured material is cosmetic plastic waste: separating out colour mixtures, experimenting with injection moulds, designing new ones to sit alongside the textile work coming out of the studio.
For Exiled, he makes 3D-printed jewellery. He wants whoever owns a piece to understand its full history: the design decisions, the material's life – and the fact that it can be taken apart and remade into something else. The circularity is not incidental. It is the point.
Outside ReFactory, Sam is learning joinery, renovating his house and spending time with his three children and fiancée. On their travels to farms, parks, aquariums, or for long walks, he always comes back carrying something that inspires new projects or shapes his craft and love of making.

Quote from artisan
“Using something that was once trash and headed for landfill, now beautiful and given a whole new life – that makes me feel better every single project I work on.”
