Textile Technician
Jo Smith
No material that reaches Jo is truly at the end of its life. She has spent her career proving it – one rescued, reimagined piece at a time.
Jo’s mum, nan and aunties all knitted, crocheted and sewed, passing their creations down to her. At school, she quietly noticed that her mum’s well-cut dresses stood out from those of her contemporaries.
Taking this grounding in craft into later life, she achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion despite adversity caused by late-diagnosed dyslexia. Work in a baby clothes factory followed, then an alterations shop, where she saw first-hand the alchemy of deconstruction.
Every material Jo works with at Exiled arrives in large containers – ripped, unlabelled, in no great state. These are the materials at the end of the line: the ones that couldn’t be donated or resold, heading for RDF if not for intervention.
She describes the studio as a laboratory of transformation. Waste materials don't just get used – they dictate the creativity. For her, this is where Exiled comes to life – setting out to prove that waste isn’t just to be written off.
She and the team wash, iron, sort, and unpick it all, saving everything, down to the zips and buttons for future use. The unpicking is slow, but careful work. Rush it, Jo says, and you lose what you are trying to salvage. But it is also research: understanding how a fabric handles, what it might be paired with and what other life it could have.
Jo has worked extensively with luxury car upholstery leather for Exiled. Making tops, she has developed a technique of punching holes and weaving the leather, giving the rigid fabric breathability and movement, along with a new textural integrity it wouldn’t otherwise have.
“Exiled is not just about making clothes, but proving a concept – that we can be more thoughtful in the way we make and live. Every new garment from end-of-life is a story – a piece of the planet's future."
Jo keeps an eye on what people wear when she’s out. She runs cross-country and loves wildlife. She also loves getting her hands dirty in the garden and following it with bangers, mash, beans and gravy – along with a costume drama to boot.

Quote from artisan
“When you take something apart to mend it, you see what techniques go into garments, how they are constructed. It was here that I learned the most.”
